In this project spotlight, we're happy to share a current project that blends style with practicality, specifically designed to support aging in place. This updated floorplan turns a standard primary bathroom with tight spaces, into a more spacious, adaptable retreat, ensuring that it meets the evolving needs of the homeowners for years to come.
The Vision
The goal of this remodel is to create a primary bathroom that not only updates the style, but also provides a safe and comfortable environment for the retired homeowners. They built their custom home 20 years ago, and while still happy with their home, they have since become more familiar with important features that will support their needs in the future and make it more possible for them to remain living in their own home as they age. Including aging in place elements in the remodel ensures that the home can adapt to changing needs, allowing the homeowners to live independently and comfortably for years to come.
Key Updates and Features
Create more usable space: The homeowners want to keep a similar floorplan, without moving around plumbing if possible. They also want to keep the doorway near the toilet that leads to the walk-in closet. By removing the outdated soaker tub (which they very rarely used), this creates more space to move the vanity and enlarge the toilet and shower areas. It also creates a 5-foot turning radius, which is important for accessibility.
Wider doorways: The width of both doorways in enlarged to ensure easy and safe navigation between spaces. This width accommodates mobility devices (e.g. walker or wheelchair) if needed.
Curbless shower: This feature enhances safety by reducing the risk of slips and falls. The enlarged size of the shower creates room for a future shower chair or caregiver assistance if needed. The added wall blocking allows for proper grab bar installation. The new layout offers much more space to safely approach and enter the shower.
Toilet area: The added space near the toilet allows for future grab bars, equipment, or caregiver assistance. The previous space was confined and prone to issues with accessibility.
Adaptable vanity: One of the vanities was redesigned to be adaptable for future needs. The lower cabinet has pocket doors, and the toe kick is removable, creating an accessible sink with open space underneath and allowing wheelchair users to use the sink comfortably.
Easy-to-reach storage: Storage solutions were redesigned with accessibility in mind. Upper tower cabinets and lower cabinets with drawers ensure that items are easy to reach without the need for excessive bending or stretching. This thoughtful arrangement makes everyday tasks more convenient.
The Result: A Harmonious Blend of Style and Practicality
The new floorplan for this primary bathroom is an example of how thoughtful design can seamlessly integrate safety features with style. Every update was made with the intent to create a space that is both functional and beautiful, ensuring that it will serve the homeowners' needs for years to come.
This project highlights the importance of planning for future needs without sacrificing aesthetic appeal. By focusing on accessibility and convenience, we’ve created a primary bathroom that offers both peace of mind and luxury.
